The goal of our field volunteer program is to contribute to sustainable development in the area, and is part of the kalamos and Kastos sustainable development program. An important goal of this, is to help educate and inspire people from around the world with respect to sustainability and nature conservation. It is based in the Kalamos Island biological field station. Volunteers work on a pre-agreed plan with us based on the structure of our program.
How it works
There are two ways you can participate in our work. The first is by participating in one of our pre-arrange activities for the field season. The second is to organize an activity for each volunteer individually in one of our thematic areas of work . We work out a pre-agreed plan on an individual volunteer basis which can include a mixture of activities both pre-arranged and an individual basis one in one of our thematic areas.
The program works by refurbishing formerly derelict areas and structures for its infastructure in an eco-friendly manner . The model of existence for program directors and support staff and participants is that of an eco-community. We try and get as much of our energy from sustainable sources such as sustain-ably cut wood, produce our own organic food in our farms and permaculture project. We recycle our own waste materials for re-use as much as possible and for our monitoring programs we also collect materials from the community such as cans that would otherwise go to the trash. We minimise resource use as much as possible. Ultimately the work we do itself is there to contribute to the sustainable development program.
Accommodation, once a week cleaning service, Wifi high speed internet, daily consumable items such as toilet paper and sugar, hot/cold water, bed linen and sheets. Heating(stove) in winter and fan in summer, certain amount of food that periodically comes from our own small farm and donations from the local community.A one hour course in the basics of the Greek Language, all orientation and training related to the program including training sessions and tutorials, transport for purposes of program participation whille on the area of the islands.
